Back Bay

For those of us looking for a low-key and less crowded trail, you have to check out Newport’s famous Back Bay. Its serene landscape serves as a haven for local wildlife and outdoor lovers alike. It has a vast network of trails which range from leisurely strolls to more challenging hikes. When hiking the Back Bay, you’ll find a unique blend of coastal and wetland ecosystems making it a bird-lover’s paradise. There are even areas through the Back Bay that have park benches and tables for packing lunch and savoring the incredible views. 

Crystal Cove Trail

One of Newport Beach’s most gorgeous areas, there’s little wonder why everyone is obsessed with Crystal Cove. It’s one of the most scenic spots to walk and several different trails lead to the sandy beaches below. Hiking Crystal Cove Trail combines breathtaking oceans views with lush wilderness. From start to finish, hiking the entire trail sums up to about nine miles. For pup lovers, it is dog-friendly, but beware of coyotes for your smaller pooches. We’ll see you there!

Buck Gully Trail

For hikers who crave a more secluded trail, Buck Gully is for you. This 3.5 mile loop trail winds through a wooded canyon brimming with wildlife and lush brush. A small creek runs through it and there’s tons of shade from trees to keep you out of the sun. Buck Gully Trail is the quintessential hiking trail that’s easy on the knees and full of nature to observe. You’re sure to see lots of wildlife as deer and coyote are pervasive in the Buck Gully area. This short trail is perfect for beginners and might be one of your new favorite trails to hike in all of Orange County. 

Pacific Ridge Trailhead

For panoramic views, hiking Newport Beach’s Pacific Ridge Trailhead will not disappoint. Delivering awe-inspiring views of the Pacific Ocean and surrounding mountains, Pacific Ridge Trailhead is one that is not flooded with people. It has multiple trails connected to it so you can choose your adventure based on your experience level. If you’re feeling brave and want to complete the entire trail, expect a 10-mile hike with lots of rest spots and incredible views. It’s the perfect place to pack a camera and witness some deer and rabbits right before your eyes.
